English finishes UB career with a win

Senior Jackie English completed her regular-season career with the University at Buffalo swim team on a winning note, though the rest of her team wouldn’t be as fortunate Saturday.

English, a graduate of Kenmore East High School, teamed with Rachel Sorg, Danielle Gervais and Kahla Walkinshaw to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of one minute, 52.51 seconds in the opening event of UB’s senior day match with Cornell at the Alumni Arena Natatorium.

Freshman Megan Stratton and junior Tess Johnson had season-best showings for the Bulls (3-9 overall, 0-7 Mid-American Conference), finishing the three-meter diving competition with scores of 219.52 and 180.15, respectively, good enough for second and third places.

Junior Julie Marcotte scored her fifth-straight victory in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching first in a time of 2:28.33. Marcotte also scored a victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.24).

Cornell, however, rebounded to take a 163-135 team victory. The 135-point production was the highest team output since Oct. 22.

The Bulls will next compete in the MAC Championships, which take place Feb. 23-25 at the University of Akron.

- Indoor track and field: Both the men’s and women’s squads finished in 10th place at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup hosted by Penn State University this past weekend. The men’s team scored 25 points, good enough for 10th out of 13 teams, while the women compiled 31 points, leaving them 10th out of 15 squads.

Roy Richards won the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 1.75 inches. Richards ranks third in the MAC with a leap of 24 feet, 3 inches, a mark he set at the Cornell Invitational earlier in the season.

On the women’s side, Jen Jezorski broke Christina Keck’s 2003 mile record, finishing in 4 minutes, 50.20 seconds. Jezorski’s time was good enough for a second-place finish at the meet and was also six seconds better than her personal record and eight-tenths of a second faster than Keck.
