OUR VIEW: Palin daughter’s pregnancy off limits

The Tonawanda News

The selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin by presidential hopeful John McCain was a shock to most. Since the national media outlets were introduced to Palin, much has come out about her background.

Included in that was the revelation that her 17-year-old daughter is

pregnant.

Democrats, and even some Republicans, have jumped negatively on this story. No surprise there, it’s

politics.

The Palin camp confirmed the pregnancy, and added that she will have the baby and plans to marry the father.

Notably Barack Obama and other higher-ups in the Democratic party have said family is not fair game in this race. Obama denounced any attacks on the young mother-to-be. Good for him.

Let’s keep it to policy, not

pregnancy.

Family should not be part of the presidential race or any political race for that matter. Significant others usually get into the fray, and that’s OK, but attacks on children is definitely out of bounds.

Sarah Palin’s daughter is not the one running. If she were, then maybe we’d care about her being pregnant. But since she’s not, we really

shouldn’t care.

Politics is ugly. It always has been, even when family isn’t involved. We say all the time that politicians should know when they are running that their lives from there on forward are an open book, for all to see. That’s the case for the person running, but not their children.
