Tonawanda News — NerdWallet, a financial literacy website, conducted a study of best communities to raise children in New York state by analyzing local school performance, general cost of living and cities’ growth, according to NerdWallet spokesperson Laura Zulliger.

“In recent years, the community of Tonawanda has proven just how strong they are,” the NerdWallet website states. “When faced with air quality problems in 2009, the community galvanized to find a solution. Since then, air quality has much improved. The benzene that once leaked into the air is now about 90 percent gone, according to a January study. Resilient community aside, there’s a lot to love in Tonawanda. The homes are cheap, with a median value of $111,500.”

NerdWallet determined Saratoga Springs was the No. 1 best city in New York to raise kids because there are “plenty of golf courses, a race track and natural springs, which offer potable water.” The website states it’s an “idyllic setting” for children, and emphasizes the city’s “great” schools, which were rated a 9 out of 10 by GreatSchools, a national school-rating database.

The second best city in New York was Buffalo suburb West Seneca, followed by East Meadow and then Buffalo-suburb Cheektowaga.
