Tonawanda News — It’s Mother’s Day time again — next Sunday, May 5 — and with that comes certain expectations. You’ve got your typical flowers, brunch, perhaps a nice bottle of perfume.
But what if you want to think outside the box this year? What if what mom really wants is just to spend time with the kids and do something she wouldn’t normally treat herself to?
We’ve compiled a list of some unique Mother’s Day activities to do throughout the region, so go out there, enjoy and spoil your moms.
Be crafty and shop your heart out
The Downtown Merchants Association of North Tonawanda is hosting a Mother’s Day Shop Hop 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, the day before the holiday.
Suzanne Todaro, coordinator of the event and one of two owners of Gleam and Glimmer Glass Studio said the event sprawls down Webster Street roughly from Sweeney Street to Goundry Street.
The idea is for moms and their families to take the opportunity to check out the street’s merchants and get a little crafty at the same time.
“You get to (start off by) painting a little clay pot at Partners in Art and then you hop from shop to shop up and down the street and pick up a little flower” from each participating merchant,” Todaro said.
By the end of your travels, you’ll have an entire flower pot full of fresh blooms to give to mom and perhaps a few newly bought gifts.
Todaro said she doesn’t have the final list of participating merchants at this point, but last year 14 stores took part.
“Look for a sign on each door saying they are participating,” she said, encouraging customers to also to take in a meal at one of the street’s many restaurants.
