Tonawanda News — Cody McGregor threw a complete-game three-hitter and walked one while striking out 14 batters as Tonawanda defeated Cleveland Hill, 8-3, in high school baseball action Friday.
McGregor was also potent at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored to lead the Tonawanda Warriors boys baseball team (1-4, 1-1 ECIC IV) to its first win of the season over the Eagles.
Head coach John Frank was happy to get the win and also praised his team for not giving up when they were losing earlier in the contest.
“I think we played well today, for the most part,” Frank said. “We were down 2-0 early, and I told our team to not lose their composure because the potential for a comeback is always there. We hung in there and we were able to make the comeback. McGregor was also excellent for us.”
Frank was adamant about the team’s chances of rebounding from a 1-4 start, saying that the team has faced some issues that didn’t allow them to play up to their potential.
“We lost some key players to injury earlier in the year, and we’ve had to adjust to that,” Frank said. “We’re still in the process of doing that. We’ve got a young team too, but that’s no excuse. I think we’ll be able to bounce back and do well down the stretch.”
