Warriors softball no-hit by Eden

Tonawanda News — This is the time of the year when you have to grind it out. You have to dig a little deeper. The time of year when your heart is tested.

Jill Murray struck out 12 in a no-hit effort as Eden blanked Tonawanda 11-0 in ECIC IV softball action that was played at Veterans Memorial Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Murray worked fast, mixed her pitches well, hit her spots and kept Tonawanda batters off balance with her off-speed pitches.

Falling to 4-3 in league, the mental and physical grind of playing their fourth game in three days had clearly taken its toll on the Lady Warriors as they committed five errors in the second inning. A lack of focused led to uncharacteristic bad throws and the Raiders took full advance of Tonawanda’s mistakes as they raced to a 7-0 lead.

“That’s exactly what I just said to them,” said Lady Warriors coach Kim Fox after the team’s post game talk. “You’re tired. It’s tiring. It’s Wednesday and we’ve already played four games and we’re trying to squeeze it all in in a short amount of time, but they have to suck it up and do it. There’s no way around it. We have 11 girls on our roster....They need to toughen it up, stick it out and play. There’s nowhere else to go. There’s no one else to put in behind them.”

Carly Nasca (two doubles) and Mallory Mecca (double) also scored twice and collected three hits for the Raiders, who added runs in the fourth and fifth innings and two in the sixth.

Tonawanda’s starting pitcher Rachel Allen battled as best as she could for six innings, but she appeared to be feeling the effects of pitching the bulk of innings in Tonawanda’s double header split with Cleveland Hill the day before.
