Locals compete in state track meet

Tonawanda News — Athletes from Tonawanda High School and Kenmore East High School took part Friday in the NYSPHAA Track and Field Championships at Cicero High School in Syracuse.

Ken East’s Erin Obrien finished 11th in the 400m hurdles, beating her projected 12th place finish.

“I did it, I beat it out,” said O’Brien. “It was my goal and my coaches goal to go out there and beat my seed and I did it.”

Ken East track coach Jennifer Stanton was not surprised by O’Brien’s emotions toward her performance.

“She has been very dedicated from the start,” said Stanton. “That’s why she is the way she was (Friday), Motivated and dedicated. She was excited. She was happy. She ran her race. She did well.”

Tonawanda’s 4x100m relay team of Bob Liebel. Corbin Sawyer, Nate Holler and Brandon Frye finished fifth with a school record of 44.0.

However, the team was not happy with that final.

“The relay, it was tough. It was a great season for them regardless,” said Tonawanda coach David Nedell. “It’s bad to see them walk off the track with disappointment on their faces. But, they are returning home as school record holders. So, they should be proud of that.”

Liebel also competed in the 400m sprint. He finished 8th with a time of 50.64.

Liebel, Snyder and O’Brien ran their last meets at the high school level.

Holler and Frye, who play soccer and football in the fall respectively, each have another shot next year if they continue their careers on the track.

The state track championship will continue today.
