MSM wins historic 100th MMA game

Tonawanda News — The stage was set on May 10 for the Mount St. Mary lacrosse team to chase the program's 100th Monsignor Martin Association victory, but mother nature had other ideas.

Rain and hail forced the game to be postponed until this Saturday, making Monday's contest with Holy Angels the potential milestone contest.

So with heavy hearts — as MSM prepares to say goodbye to Holy Angels with its doors scheduled to be closed at the end of this school year — the Thunder dominated and did what they had to do to knock off the Stars, 16-5, to improve to 10-0 in MMA play this season.

"The girls were excited but it was tough because Holy Angels has a lot going on with their school closing," said Thunder coach Marissa Dauria. "It wasn't the best time to celebrate."

Shannon Pelitera led the way once again for the Thunder, scoring five goals which brings her season total to 46.

Dauria said the program's founder, Bill Riffle, was in attendance which made the occasion even more special.

MSM got off to a hot start and went into halftime with a 10-1 lead, and then cruised to victory in the final half.

Dauria said the entire team knows what a big accomplish 100 wins is for the program, but that every player is still focused on the ultimate goal.

"As big of an accomplishment as that was, in terms of their season it doesn't affect the season," she said. "They want to go undefeated and win the championship. They want to get it done and you can't just be happy with (a milestone)."

The Thunder have three games left before the MMA playoffs begin on May 21, beginning Thursday against St. Mary's (Lancaster) on Senior Night.
