CITY OF TONAWANDA: Walk with meaning

Staff Reports
The Tonawanda News

Members of the Knights of Columbus in the City of Tonawanda held an Alhambra Walk Tuesday evening from the Main Street hall to the chapel of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

Participants in the procession included a bag piper from the Gordon Highlander Band, 4th Degree Color Guard Knights members, and members of the developmentally disabled community, for whom the group was raising money. The caravan also included relatives of recently deceased Alhambra members.

After the walk, members celebrated Mass at St. Francis of Assisi.

Alhambra was founded in 1904 and is named after the palace in Spain where the Moors surrendered to Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492 after occupying Spain for almost 800 years, said Gerald J. Genson Sr., chairman of the local Alhambra group.

“The original purposes of the order were primarily social and the marking of important places in the Catholic history of North America,” Genson said.

The Tonawanda organization set up a scholarship fund for people with developmental disabilities, allowing them to further their education to teach others with the same circumstances.
