TOWN OF TONAWANDA: Separate incidents lead to thief's arrest
Staff Reports The Tonawanda News
TOWN OF TONAWANDA — A public urination charge led town police to a suspect in an unrelated crime early Sunday morning.
Police were searching the area for a Hispanic male accused of stealing a 30-pack of beer from a convenience store and detained a group of three young men on bicycles fitting the clerk’s description. While questioning the suspects, one said it was his friend Eliseo Linares who stole the beer and then parted ways with the rest of the group.
At a nearby home in the Sheridan Parkside neighborhood, police were responding to a separate call from neighbors there, who saw a man later identified as Linares exit a house and allegedly begin to urinate in plain view.
While police were questioning Linares and two other males, Linares called a member of the first group, also in police custody. An officer picked up the phone and told Linares they were looking for him in relation to the theft, at which point Linares said, “I can’t believe they ratted me out,” according to reports.
The officer heard the voice of another policeman he recognized in the background and radioed over that they should detain Linares.
Linares allegedly began swinging his fists and elbows at police while being taken into custody. The report also states that en route to the gas station for the witness to confirm his identity, Linares kicked the inside of the police car’s door, damaging the window controls.
In the end, Linares was charged with petit larceny, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and public lewdness.
