KENMORE: Village ranked a top 10 great neighborhood

The American Planning Association has reaffirmed something that village residents have known for years — Kenmore is a great place to live.
Kenmore made the APA’s 2009 list of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods in the United States, singled out for things like historic architecture, accessibility, functionality and commitment of government officials. Walkability was another key component of the community’s appeal, which is something residents fighting for the survival of the local library and post office have said for years. The community involvement of those very residents was another factor in getting Kenmore recognized.
In a released statement, APA Chief Executive Officer Paul Farmer said the village shows how valuable and important first-ring suburbs are to metropolitan areas.
“Kenmore is truly a model worth emulating,” Farmer said.
While Mayor Patrick Mang said the village is thrilled to be honored this way, he contends the title of “great neighborhood” is something locals already knew was theirs.
“Everyone who lives and works in Kenmore knows what a special place this is,” Mang said.
It’s that community pride and spirit that Trustee Paul Catalano said sets Kenmore’s residents apart from those of other well-designed suburban areas.
“Kenmore has so much to offer — beautiful homes, a strong business district, excellent public safety and emergency services — but its greatest asset is its people and the strong sense of community you find here,” Catalano said.
A formal awards presentation will take place at 11 a.m. Oct. 31 at the Village Green, 2919 Delaware Avenue.
