TOWN OF TONAWANDA — A burglary at the town’s Brounshidle American Legion Post left the group missing more than $600.
The post’s treasurer told police he locked up the group’s office at approximately 3 p.m. Saturday. At around 10 a.m. Tuesday, the treasurer saw wood splinters on the floor, several desk drawers out of order and found a roll of stamps missing.
At that point nothing was reported to police. The area was cleaned up before Legion members found the latch of the office door laying in the corner four hours later. A further check of the desk drawers revealed $600 in cash and $40 in rolled quarters to be missing.
Police arrived to investigate, but since the wood splinters had been removed and the drawers cleaned and reorganized detectives found no useful evidence. Curt Collins, the post’s steward, told police he made a deposit for the group at 10 a.m. Monday and didn’t see anything out of place at that time.
Collins added that there have been numerous contractors in and out of the building doing work, so the doors have been open for several weeks.
