Tonawanda News — 2002 — 10 years ago

• Tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter, the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks exploded for 34 unanswered points en route to a 51-13 rout of Kenmore West at Crosby Field.

• A three-vehicle accident on the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, coupled with it being the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in Canada and Columbus Day weekend here, caused brake lights to burn red at the Rainbow Bridge as well for much of the day.

1987 — 25 years ago

• Arrangements were finalized for the Ken-Ton Crop Walk that started at the Parkside Village Community Building and covered a 7 mile course.

• Allentown Industries opened a new facility on Fillmore Avenue. Seventy-five developmentally disabled adults would refurbish furniture and do light assembly work.

1962 — 50 years ago

• Carol Allen of the Town of Tonawanda was awarded a 4-year scholarship sponsored by the Empire State School Press Association. She was to study journalism at Syracuse University.

• Burglars escaped with $2,000 in cash and an undetermined number of televisions sets, phonographs and radios from Gates Circle Appliances on Delaware Avenue in Kenmore.

1942 — 70 years ago

• The Tonawanda City Council donated to the war effort 500 tons of A-1 steel in the form of obsolete trolley rails formerly used on Minerva, Delaware and William Streets.

• Having fallen into decay, the old Palmer house at Payne Avenue and Goundry Streets was ordered cleaned up and weeds removed. The former showcase was built by lumberman Charles Weston and later housed Mayor Eugene Von Kleist. Its iron fence would probably go for scrap.
