Household waste drop-offs growing

Tonawanda News — Niagara County and North Tonawanda are teaming up this weekend for a one-stop waste disposal drop-off event to be held Saturday at the city Department of Public Works.

Niagara County Environmental Coordinator Dawn M. Timm said she has expanded household waste disposal options this year to four dates, the first of which she planned for North Tonawanda.

But Timm said after a call from North Tonawanda Mayor Rob Ortt, the two began discussions on how to make the drop-off options more all-encompassing.

That conversation led to a three-tiered effort this weekend, when residents who make an appointment with the county can bring in toxic household waste like oil, paint and chemicals.

To add to that, North Tonawanda Police Department will also take part in the four-hour event and expand the area’s participation in the National Drug Take Back Day at the Erie Avenue DPW site. Residents with unused prescription medication can now take them to the DPW facility or to DeGraff Memorial Hospital. The North Tonawanda DPW also will be accepting resident’s electronic wares such as computers, stereos and phones.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 758 Erie Ave., North Tonawanda. Appointments are still available through Friday. Those interested in bringing in household waste can call 434-6568. For more information go to
