Julia Hy and Michelle Selbe won first and second place in the annual spelling bee at St. John Lutheran School in North Tonawanda. It took several rounds to find a winner in the contest.

• Kenmore West High School graduate Jim McNally was named to the position of offensive line coach by Buffalo Bills head coach Mike Mularkey.

1989 - 25 years ago

• A six-month dream became a reality for officials of the Niagara Frontier Theatre Organ Society with the formal signing and purchase of the Historic Riviera Theatre and its Mighty Wurlitzer organ.

Anne Simon, Paul Henry, Howard Fell and Pam Henry were planning a 50s dance to be held at the Eldredge Club for the benefit of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of the Tonawandas.

1964 - 50 years ago

• The NT Board of Education appointed Donald Gredwick principal of Spruce School and Maxine Pettibone as principal of Pine Woods School.

• The Interclub Council of Buffalo presented former NT Judge Catherine Rowley Lautz with the Susan B. Anthony Award for her professional and civic accomplishments. She was the first woman ever elected to public office in the Tonawandas when she was elected as NT’s City Attorney in 1957. Later she was the first woman elected as a judge in NT.

1944 - 70 years ago

• More than 100 Flying Fortresses sprayed tons of high explosives and fragmentation bombs over German gunners crouching inside the stone-walled Benedictine monastery of Monte Cassino and in deep pillboxes on the neighboring hillside.

• To meet the manpower shortage in the Tonawanda Police force caused by the induction of two members of the Armed Forces, Mayor Clarence Hackett suggested that members of the auxiliary police force be called upon to assist in time of emergency or that present officers be permitted to work longer hours and receive compensation for the entire time.
