Do You Remember Feb. 22?

Tonawanda News — 2004 - 10 years ago

Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Mikos of Tonawanda were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They had been married at St. Francis of Assisi Church in 1954.

• The first Tonawanda News open house was a packed house as hundreds of people from surrounding communities came to see how the paper runs.

1989 - 25 years ago

James Pane, president of Pane’s Restaurant in North Tonawanda, was finalizing plans to expand his restaurant into the recently-vacated 4,000-square-foot hardware store adjacent to his business.

• A caboose, donated by Conrail, was on its way from Reading, Pa. to join the Navy plane at the Town of Tonawanda’s Kenney Field.

1964 - 50 years ago

Ina Nist had a one-woman art show on display in the window of Nixon Camera and Photo Supply Company in Kenmore.

Mary Lou Lavin, a 16 year-old junior at Tonawanda High School, was rated fourth in the nation in the standing board jump event at the AAU Junior Olympic Board Jump.

1944 - 70 years ago

• Tonawanda Police Chief George C. Marohn was authorized to employ regular officers of the force for extra service at such times as he deemed essential to the proper policing of the city. The rate of pay was the same as that received by the permanent policemen.

• Over 300 people jammed into the American Legion Hall to attend the gala dance and floor show arranged by the Tonawanda Air Raid Wardens to make it “the most successful affair we ever ran” according to general chairman Ed Williams. Eight splendid acts comprised a floor show. The Swing Masters provided dance and incidental music.
