Tonawanda News — 2003 - 10 years ago

• Tonawanda Police Officer Tim Toth was recovering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome – a neuro-immunological disorder – whose symptoms Toth had been experiencing since his return from a recent Florida vacation.

• The North Tonawanda Library was honoring a number of its long-time employees including Ann Selover (26 years), Jane Olstad (21 years), Ann Pikoff (23 years), Joyce Burton (23 years), Peggy Waite (26 years), Daniel Killian (26 years) and Janet McKenna (32 years).

1988 - 25 years ago

Barry Yound of Tonawanda was elected a vice president of Norstar Bank.

• The crossword puzzle celebrated its 75th birthday. The first puzzle appeared in the 1913 “Fun” supplement of the New York World and was done to fill space.

1963 - 50 years ago

• McDonalds held its grand opening at 333 Meadow Drive in North Tonawanda. Santa Claus arrived by helicopter and was joined by Dave Thomas of Rocket Ship 7 and Joey Reynolds of WKBW.

• The Tonawanda Common Council accepted the resignation of Oscar Schulte as Water Department superintendent. Mr. Schulte retired after 25 years of service with the Water Department including 17 years as superintendent.

1943 - 70 years ago

• Residents of the Tonawandas relying on International Railway company buses to get to and from their places of employment were deeply concerned over the threatened strike of operators of company buses and trolley cars operated by the IRC in the Niagara Frontier area. Officials of the IRC were meeting with union heads in an effort to avert a threatened strike of all IRC lines that would paralyze businesses and industry in the important Buffalo and Niagara Falls war production centers.
