Tonawanda News — A Facebook page for the cause, “Save Saint Francis of Assisi School,” has more than 2,200 likes and dozens of comments.
Supporters are taking issue with the reasoning behind the decision to close St. Francis, citing its $500,000 endowment and service to both Niagara County and Erie County students. Although other Catholic schools will remain open in the Town of Tonawanda, both the City of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda do not bus out of the district, meaning that city parents will have to find other means of transportation.
Tuition at many of the other Catholic elementary schools, including St. John’s and St. Christopher’s in the town, is also higher than the cost at St. Francis. It is only school set for closure that has increased its enrollment since 2003.
