Armed robbery sends schools into lockout

CRIME: CVS clerk assaulted, suspect still on the loose.

— — A suspect is still on the loose following an armed robbery at 7:50 a.m. Thursday at a CVS Pharmacy store on 955 Payne Ave. in North Tonawanda.

The robbery sent the nearby North Tonawanda High School and Meadow Elementary School into lockout mode as students were arriving for the day, meaning that no one was allowed into the school buildings without proper identification.

The lockouts were lifted at 9:30 a.m. Police are still on the lookout for a bearded white male between 5 feet 8 inches and 6 feet tall, who is wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and sneakers.

Chief William Hall said the store clerk was assaulted during the incident and taken to DeGraff Memorial Hospital as a precautionary measure after the man brandished "what we believe to be a firearm." The clerk is now being interviewed by the authorities while video surveillance is reviewed.

"She doesn't appear to have any major injuries, but she's obviously a little upset," Hall said.

North Tonawanda police rushed to the scene as police secured the school and a police helicopter scoured nearby fields looking for the man between Ridge Road and Meadow Drive.

Anyone with information on the suspect can call the North Tonawanda Police Department at 692-4312.
