Kristen Frances Pieper, a 17-year-old North Tonawanda High School senior, won the 2004 Miss Niagara County Scholarship competition, earning her the chance to compete in the upcoming Miss New York State pageant.

• Tonawanda’s Centennial Committee was putting together the concluding event of the city’s year-long 100th anniversary celebration. The event “A Stroll Thru History” was to be held at Warren’s Restaurant, which itself was celebrating its 50th anniversary.

1989 - 25 years ago

• The Tonawanda Common Council put together a budget that increased the city tax rate by 87 cents per $1,000.

• Best selling books were “Wealth Without Risk” by Charles Givens, “All I Really Need to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten” by Robert Fulghum, “Gracie” by George Burns and “The Satanic Verses” by Salmun Rushdie.

1964 - 50 years ago

• No paper published.

1944 - 70 years ago

• Heavy ice that formed on the barge canal at Wendelville crushed all hope of recovering the bodies of the two brothers Edward and Robert Czeranski, 14 and 12 respectively, of that village until mild weather results in a change that will make it possible to resume the search. They had fallen through thin ice on the canal.

• The Women’s Shakespeare Club attended a Mexican supper in Grace Methodist Church house, Seymour Street, served under the auspices of Mrs. James Roach. The program consisted of three piano duets of Mexican music played by Mrs. Theron Miller and Miss Dorothy Zazicki. A trip through Mexico was presented by Mr. Fred Hamp Jr.
