Martina Marzowka of Scharbeutz, Germany, spent a month observing classes at St. John Lutheran School in North Tonawanda. She was training to teach English at the elementary school level.

• Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Frank Reich, recently named president of a North Carolina seminary, came back to Western New York to speak at Bethesda Full Gospel Tabernacle in Tonawanda.

1964 — 50 years ago

• The Town of Tonawanda Recreation Department planned to do a study to explore the feasibility of constructing an enclosed, multi-purpose auditorium to supplement the town’s 2 uncovered skating arenas.

• A 110-foot radio tower was erected at the rear of the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Civil Defense Headquarters at 3350 Delaware Ave.
