Tonawanda News — Jackie Smilinich, the Democratic candidate for the Second Ward council race in the City of Tonawanda, has won the Working Families nomination, Erie County Board of Elections representatives said Friday.
As a result, incumbent Blake Boyle, who has served on the council for 12 years, will not appear on November’s ballot.
The local Democratic party dumped Boyle for Smilinich earlier this year. Boyle then challenged Smilinich, a former school board president, in a primary earlier this month, but lost. The final vote count released Friday reported that Smilinich won 116 votes and Boyle won 88.
Boyle had submitted a petition for the Working Families endorsement, but in August, Smilinich objected to the petition, and the Erie County Board of Elections rejected his efforts due to insufficient signatures.
Boyle said he plans to make a return to city politics and that he will support Republican Jon Juliano in the race.
“He is the best man for the job now,” he said.
Juliano, who works at an accounts receivable company, won the Independent nomination by one vote over Smilinich, officials said Friday.
