Tonawanda News — 2003 - 10 years ago

• Four NT High School graduates – Jennifer Argentieri, Carolyn Wiech, Steven Scull and Bethany Lipa – were part of the UB Medical School freshman class.

• The 22nd Alzheimer’s Memory Walk was held at five locations in WNY to raise funds for support programs and services for more than 47,000 people afflicted with the disease.

1988 - 25 years ago

• Tony Piccolo and his orchestra presented a performance in the Riviera Theatre to benefit the reconstruction of the Roundhouse of the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum.

• Scott Norwood’s third field goal of the game, from 41 yards out with 11 seconds to play, rallied the Buffalo Bills to a 16-14 victory over the New England Patriots.

1963 - 50 years ago

• Twenty-three year old Edward Eckert, Jr. bought a 1931 Ford roaster and brought it to his home on Dale Drive in the Town of Tonawanda.

• A Santa Claus School, the only school of its kind in the world, was located in Albion. Classes were scheduled to start in October with a graduation scheduled when classes ended.

1943 - 70 years ago

• Notified about three children being bitten by dogs in Tonawanda, Capt. Clarence Luther, acting chief of police said drastic steps would be taken to prevent a recurrence. Destruction of two of the vicious canines had already been decreed.

• At the first fall meeting of the W.C.T.U. at the home of the Misses Leah and Lorraine Miller, 281 Broad St., the following officers were elected: Miss Leah Miller, president; Mrs. James Helfer, vice president, Miss Agnes MacLaren, secretary, and Miss Elizabeth MacLaren, treasurer. The theme of the meeting was “We press on.”
