Open house set for Fire Prevention Week

Tonawanda News — An open house at Sheridan Park Fire Hall is set for from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Chief Jim Chatham said.

The annual event is part of a kickoff for Fire Prevention Week, which begins Oct. 6, he said. The open house includes displays from a number of different emergency services agencies.

“We will have the state police, county sheriff’s (deputies), county emergency services and the Mercy Flight landing team,” he said.

Firefighters will also be teaching children about dialing 911 and how to operate a fire extinguisher. Children can also squirt a fire house and try on gear, Chatham said.

The company will also be recruiting members to the fire hall.

A town-wide event, with all six fire companies, will take place Friday at the Sheridan-Delaware Plaza near Sears. The event runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is regarded as the biggest open house in the area.

A fire safety house will be at the event, as well as Sparky the Fire Dog.

“Each fire company will also bring its own apparatus ... from hazmat to extrication and first aid,” said Robert O’Keefe, of the Kenilworth Fire Department, who is organizing the event.

Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct. 6 to Oct. 12 this year. Firefighters in the area will be visiting schools to educate students, and this year’s national event is focusing on preventing kitchen fires.
