• Hollywood announced that Mel Gibson’s passion-stirring Biblical epic “The Passion of Christ” would open in the United States next Feb 25th – Ash Wednesday.

• Cardinal O’Hara alumnus, Brennan Day, was presented with The College of Business Administration Outstanding Senior Award from Niagara University.

1988- 25 years ago

• Hall of Fame baseball broadcaster and former voice of the NY Yankees, Mel Allen, was at a fishing expedition at the Niagara River.

• Students at St. Edmund’s School made birthday cards for Batavia native, Terry Anderson, who was being held hostage in Lebanon. He was the longest held hostage in U.S. history.

1963 - 50 years ago

• Tonawanda High School’s Senior Class officers included Peter Andolina, Francine O’Amico, Mark Gaeth and Janice Rech.

Jeffrey Desautels, a senior at North Tonawanda High School, was named “Youth of the Month” by the Exchange Club. Jeffrey was president of the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society, sports editor of the school newspaper, and literary editor of the yearbook.

1943 - 70 years ago

• The proposal of the Carpenter Bus Lines to reroute one of its lines in order to serve the 200 families at Nor-Ton Court was brought up to the North Tonawanda Common Council but approval was withheld a second time.

• Continuing the policy it inaugurated last year with such success, Boys Club of the Tonawandas arranged a comprehensive program of entertainment and education for Halloween designed to turn youthful energies away from the traditional mischievous channels which often result in destruction of property.
