March 9 is Passport Day in the USA

Tonawanda News — In advance of a busier summer travel season, Erie County will offer a national initiative catered to residents looking to obtain passports.

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs said his office will join “passport acceptance facilities” and regional passport agencies across the United States to celebrate “Passport Day in the USA”. The event will be held  from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 9 at the Northtown Auto Bureau, located in the Northtown Plaza, 3095 Sheridan Drive in Amherst.

County employees from the clerk’s office will be on hand to accept and process passport applications during the event termed by Jacobs as “passports on the move” outreach and information regarding U.S. citizens interested a passport.

”I encourage anyone planning their spring or summer vacation or college students planning a semester abroad, to come to our passport outreach and apply for their passport,” Jacobs said.

Applicants will be able to apply for a passport card, passport book or both. For an additional fee, an expedited service is offered, which Jacobs said reduces the processing time from several weeks down to days. Payment must be in the form of check or money order and made payable to the Erie County Clerk. No cash will be accepted.

”It can be difficult for people to take off work and come downtown, so we wanted to take this opportunity to better serve our constituents,” Jacobs said, as the motivation for the event.

Applicants will need to bring an original or certified copy of their birth certificate, proof of identity such as a current New York state driver’s license or non-driver identification, and one 2-by-2 photo. A passport photo can also be taken on-site for a $10 fee.

Passport applications, a list of all required documents and a schedule of fees is available by visiting www.erie.gov/clerk or by contacting the Erie County Clerk’s Office directly at 858-8866.
