Town police warn of Craigslist robberies

Tonawanda News — Town of Tonawanda police issued a statement on the department Facebook page Thursday warning residents of a recent spat of armed robberies geared toward purchases made via Craigslist, a classified advertisement website.

According to the statement, three armed robberies occurred since Nov. 24, during which a suspect called victims who had posted items for sale on Craigslist, arranged a time and place to make the transaction, then robbed the individuals at gunpoint.

The items taken included an X-box, iPad and a computer. Repeated calls to Town police to request additional details Thursday were not immediately returned, though a later Facebook post indicated that the robberies took place in Buffalo.

The victims told police the suspect brandished a black handgun and described as a black male, approximately 6`1” and between the ages of 24 and 30 years old. The suspect did not have facial hair or visible tattoos and used the names “Calvin” and “Derrick” to arrange a meeting and lure the victims.

The statement did not indicate whether the victims were Tonawanda residents or whether the victims were robbed at the same locale, though Tonawanda police urged those with knowledge of the suspect to call the department 876-5300 or to leave a confidential message on a police tip line at 879-6606.

Police also urged residents to use caution when buying or selling items on Craigslist.
