Tonawanda News — Not many artists get a chance to have hundreds of people viewing and wearing their artwork on one night, but one Western New York child will get that opportunity Dec. 31.
Designs are sought for the buttons used for admission to the Kids Fun Zones at the Gateway Harbor New Years on the Canal event. The deadline was originally set for last Friday, but has been extended to Thursday for more entries, said Debbie Darling, vice president of 4DNT, the not-for-profit group that produces the ball drop. Those interested can pick up entry sheets at the Tonawanda News, 435 River Road, North Tonawanda.
The group is looking for “something that says 2013 ... something fun and colorful,” Darling said. “It doesn’t necessarily have to feature the canal, but they can incorporate water, because the ball drop is on the canal. They can do anything they think could look cute or fun on a button.”
The contest is open to children ages 3 to 15 from all surrounding communities. Entries can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org, mailed to Tracey Miles, P.O. Box 1347, North Tonawanda NY 14120 or dropped off at the Tonawanda News.
The creator of the winning entry will receive a $100 savings bond courtesy of state Sen. George Maziarz and four free buttons for admission to the Kids Fun Zones on Dec. 31.
Darling said this year’s Fun Zones will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 31 at Salem United Church of Christ, 114 Morgan St., Tonawanda, for ages 3 to 10 and at Rainbow Roller Rink, 101 Oliver St., North Tonawanda, for ages 11 and older.
“They will have all kinds of games and activities and crafts and that sort of thing,” Darling said. “They have their own balloon countdown at 9 p.m. For the first 50 at the Rainbow Rink, there will be free glow-in-the-dark necklaces ... and they will also have a balloon countdown.”
