Tonawanda News — 2003 — 10 years ago

• A giant inflatable Hulk made his debut along the Niagara River shoreline. An attached sign read “The Hulk Says Save Our Boathouses.”

•  Nellie Barmann, Jay Barmann, Betty Richau, Helen Koch, Pauline Alongi, Sara Moses and Marion Gorence were the hostesses for the upcoming gathering of the Forever Young Seniors.

1988 — 25 years ago

• DeGraff Memorial Hospital Auxiliary was finalizing plans for a “Dinner Cruise” aboard the Niagara Clipper with a three-hour ride around Grand Island.

• Kool and the Gang put together a “cool” package of greatest hits for a sweltering crowd at Melody Fair.

1963 — 50 years ago

• Local residents were being advised on how to build a sunscope out of a big cardboard box and a piece of white paper for safe viewing of tomorrow’s 89 percent eclipse of the sun.

• Genesee Beer was advertising its new Zip-Sip can which needed no can opener. “First zip. Then sip.”

1943 — 70 years ago

• Both the North and South Grand Island Bridges were shut down as a manhunt for two escaped german prisoners was initiated by law enforcement officers and the military.

• A 9-year-old boy who had been swimming off the swing bridge on the canal had to be rescued by the employees of Tonawanda Boxboard Company after getting his foot caught in the tracks. He was taken to DeGraff for treatment.
