Tonawanda News — Before the second annual health fair kicks off April 13 at North Tonawanda Middle School, participants will be able to take their own strides toward getting fit, or showing off their own fitness.
Katie Feldmann, a health teacher at North Tonawanda High School, said that this year will mark the first 5K run and one-mile Family Fun Run/Walk, starting at 9 a.m. at the school.
The first 300 people to register will receive a race T-shirt. The race is a USAT&F sanctioned course that runs through Wurlitzer Park before also ending up at the school. Prizes will be awarded to overall male and female winners and those in 13 age brackets.
After the run, the fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, Feldmann said.
“We have about 40 different vendors from Tonawanda and North Tonawanda,” she said. “We’re trying to show the community and students what healthy options are out there, to encourage people to get up and get moving, to show them what’s available for them right outside their back door.”
Participants will include the fire and police departments with demonstrations, local martial arts studios, a bounce house, a face-painting station, Ride For Roswell, the YMCA, Buffalo Athletic Club, the SPCA serving Buffalo and Erie County and more. Those visiting the fair will receive get five free tickets for raffles from the various vendors. Healthy food samples will be available.
“We try to make it as interactive as possible and as informative as possible and this year we tied in the 5K to get people up and moving,” Feldmann said. “A lot of this is run by the students, and it’s a good way for the kids to show off and be active, as well.”
Last year, the school was hoping for about 200 people for its inaugural event, but wound up with 1,000, Feldmann said.
“It was a shock for us, but we’re hoping it’s as successful this year,” she said. “It’s a great thing for the teachers, parents and kids to interact with each other outside of the classroom.”
