Ortt, Tucker named 'Republicans of the Year'

Tonawanda News — The Niagara County Republican Party will name North Tonawanda Mayor Rob Ortt and Lockport Mayor Michael Tucker “Republicans of the Year” on Thursday night in Niagara Falls.

Mike Norris, the county Republican chair, said Ortt and Tucker were selected because of their “dedication to streamlining government, making government smaller and innovative ideas.”

“They’ve been active members of the Republican party for years,” he said. “And we thought it was important to honor their services. Both mayors, we believe, have done a tremendous job.”

Norris said he made the decision to select Ortt for the distinction after consulting with officers of the county committee, while Richard Updegrove, the county Legislature’s majority leader, chose Tucker.

He added the decision to choose Ortt was entirely unrelated to his bid for re-election this year, noting that Tucker was selected even though he is only halfway through his term.

Norris also cited Ortt’s experience as a city clerk-treasurer, his military service in Afghanistan and consolidation measures during his term as mayor, including moving the city’s police dispatch service to Niagara County.

“An important part is Republicans have done well in North Tonawanda,” he said, despite a Democratic majority among voters. “These leaders have brought solid ideas and have reformed government in both Lockport and North Tonawanda.”
