2004 - 10 years ago

• A flag captured by Major General Sir Gordon Drummond after the British captured Fort Niagara in 1813 was returned to the fort. The flag was purchased from Cherry Drummond, a descendent of the general for $150,000. The flag is one of the most important surviving artifacts of the War of 1812.

• The musical group 10,000 Maniacs was scheduled to play at Gateway Harbor.

1989 - 25 years ago

• Clinton Park was rededicated with an old-fashion “day at the park” that included events for the entire family. The highlight of the day was the unveiling of a plaque in memory of the late Alderman Bill Johnson.

• Billboard magazine listed the top record hits as “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler, “I’ll Be Loving You Forever,” by the New Kids on the Block, and “Every Little Step” by Bobby Brown.

1964 - 50 years ago

• No paper published.

1944 - 70 years ago

• The Dept. of Agriculture issued a less favorable forecast on civilian meat supplies in the upcoming months with some indications that some selections might reappear on the ration list in the future.

• New crop spinach was now available rich in iron and Vitamin C. J. B. McCay of the N. Y. State Emergency Food Commission suggested cooking it in bacon fat.
