Tonawanda News — BUFFALO — In its 31st year of existence, the Taste of Buffalo is still finding new restaurants to add to its roster of those serving up culinary treats.
The food festival, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 12 and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 13 in downtown Buffalo, will include 17 new restaurants and food trucks, for a total of 60 serving more than 220 menu items, said 2014 chairwoman Ann Hackett at the kick-off event Thursday at Tops Market on Elmwood Avenue.
“This is huge for us,” she said. “We are super excited.”
Among the new participants are Snooty Fox, the Lodge, Bambino Bar & Kitchen and Joe’s Deli in Buffalo, Paula’s Donuts in the Town of Tonawanda ... and from the City of Tonawanda, T.C. Wheelers Bar & Pizzeria, which will be serving up its Reuben pizza (a favorite at the Taste of the Tonawandas and Pizza Fest) as well as Pizza Nutella with almonds and caprese salad. Seven wineries will also take part.
Participating restaurants come from throughout Western New York, serving both the savory (BBQ ribs from BW’s Barbecue in Blasdell; beef-on-weck ravioli from Indian Falls Log Cabin in Corfu; tacos, nachos and “Krazy Corn” from Lloyd Taco Truck; lemon Tabasco clam chowder from the Village Inn in Grand Island) and the sweet (chrusciki, fruit bars and cheesecake from Chrusciki Bakery, which has a new site in Kenmore; peanut stick and red velvet doughnuts and doughnut holes from Paula’s Donuts) and sometimes the slightly ... unusual (”Redneck egg rolls” from J.D. Smokin Grill N Bar in West Seneca and wild boar gnocchi at The Lodge).
Hackett said new features at the event will include a “lawn-fete-style” beer tent in Niagara Square featuring Western New York bands until 11 p.m. July 12, 10 new “shade zone tents” and free, recyclable trays to help visitors carry their food. The Culinary Stage will return, featuring cooking demos and competitions such as a chocolate truffle presentation at 2 p.m. July 12 and a Lockhouse Vodka summer cocktail competition at 5:45 p.m. July 13.
