• Film legend and Oscar winner Marlon Brando died at 80. He was remembered for this role as Don Vito Corleone in “The Godfather” and starring roles in the “Last Tango in Paris” and “On the Waterfront.”

• Five-time champion Lance Armstrong began his quest for a sixth win at the Tour de France.

1989 - 25 years ago

Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons appeared at Melody Fair. The group had been singing together for more than 30 years.

• The Chautauqua Institution, a nationally recognized center for arts, education, religion and education, was designated as a national historic landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

1964 - 50 years ago

James N. Garrity, a recent graduate from State University College at Buffalo, was appointed to teach fifth grade at Meadow Elementary School in North Tonawanda.

1944 - 70 years ago

• Thirteen Twin City industries were placed on the top urgency list for the war effort among which were such major companies as Columbus McKinnon Chain Co., Durez, National Grinding Wheel, Spaulding Fibre and others.

• The North Tonawanda City Council announced that contributions to the N.T. War Memorial fund totaled $3,981 with Durez Plastics ahead by raising $500.
