Tonawanda News — 2003 — 10 years ago

• After 47 years at Niagara-Wheatfield High School, the last 25 as athletics director, Bill Ross retired.

• The Dow Jones Average was hovering around 8,600, the NASDAQ around 1,500, and the S&P 500 around 933.

1988 — 25 years ago

• The Tonawanda Senior Center hosted a dinner to honor 58 seniors who had attained the age of 80 years of age or older. Ina Schimpf was the oldest honoree at 96 years old.

• Strong public opposition killed the proposal to locate campsites at Niawanda Park.

1963 — 50 years ago

• The new $260,000 sancturay of the First Presbyterian Church was dedicated to coincide with the 111th anniversary of the church.

• During its 50th anniversary celebration, the YWCA of the Tonawandas recounted the generosity of John Sweeney, Jr. who donated the Foster House on Tremont Street as the organization’s home.

1943 — 75 years ago

• The arrival of a 25-carload lot of potatoes eased the shortage that had prevailed in the Tonawandas for several weeks.

Miss Janet Browning and Sgt. Lloyd Long were married at St. Francis Rectory. Sgt. Long was returning to his station at Sioux City, Iowa upon completion of his furlough.
