Senate OKs naming bridge for Dobson

Tonawanda News — The state Senate has approved legislation to name the I-290 bridge that crosses Colvin Boulevard as the N.Y. State Route Trooper Kevin P. Dobson, Sr. Memorial Bridge.

Dobson, a 13-year veteran, was killed on the Youngmann Highway in the Town of Tonawanda on a March morning in 2011. He was out of his patrol car handing out a traffic ticket near the Colvin exit when a 71-year-old man temporarily blinded by the sun struck him with his vehicle.

The 43-year-old trooper was rushed to Kenmore Mercy Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later. He was survived by his father, three children and a girlfriend.

State Sen. Tim Kennedy, D-Buffalo, introduced the legislation earlier this year to recognize the life and services of Dobson. Sens. Patrick Gallivan, Mark Grisanti and Michael Ranzenhofer, each representing portions of Erie County, cosponsored the legislation. The Senate passed the measure Monday, and the bill has been sent to the state Assembly.

“Trooper Kevin Dobson was faithfully committed to his duty to protect and serve our community. He went above and beyond, always working hard to keep our roads and neighborhoods safe,” Kennedy said. “The designation ... will serve as a reminder for all Western New Yorkers that our highways were made safe by Trooper Dobson and his brothers and sisters in uniform.”

Dobson’s father, Dick Dobson, said his family is honored by the effort.

“We know that Kevin’s death was not in vain, and we miss him dearly,” he said. “We want to thank Senator Kennedy and the entire Western New York delegation for their efforts in moving this bill forward.”

Legislators said the designation will compliment the monument in Dobson’s honor at the Clarence barracks, which was unveiled last month.
