Town bicyclist dies at hospital

Tonawanda News — A Town of Tonawanda teen who was found face down in Ellicott Creek Monday night has died at Erie County Medical Center, authorities said Wednesday.

Matthew Hovagimian, 18, of Raintree Island, was bicycling Monday when he left the path along Old Niagara Falls Boulevard and fell into the water, Amherst police said. A passerby found Hovagimian, dragged him from the creek and performed CPR.

The passerby called 911 at 7:45 p.m., and Ellicott Creek Fire Company and Twin City Ambulance responded to the scene.

Hovagimian was revived and transported to Erie County Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Monday night. He died of his injuries Tuesday, police said.

Assistant Police Chief Charles Cohen said no foul play is suspected, and that a medical issue likely caused the accident. The Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office said Wednesday that they had performed an autopsy on Hovagimian’s body.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
