Tonawanda News — The Bar Association of Niagara County will celebrate Law Day 2014 with a luncheon May 9 at Niagara Falls Country Club.

This year’s theme, established by the American Bar Association, is “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Counts.” It pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the passage of the 1964 Voting Rights Act.

At the luncheon, five people will be recognized for their contributions to the legal profession and the American system of justice. They are:

• The late James Perry, receiving the Hon. Paul V. Crapsi Attorney for the Child Award. This is given to an attorney whose advocacy for children affected by the court system exemplifies the importance of protecting those youths who are affected by decisions of the courts.

• Debra D. Wilson, receiving the Ralph P. Boniello Jr. Pro Bono Legal Services Award. This is given to an attorney who committed a portion of their time to providing services for those who can’t afford an attorney.

• Laura A. Wagner, receiving the Hon. Jacqueline Koshian Service Award. This is given to an attorney who has volunteered their time to promote the legal profession while also giving time to other charitable and not-for-profit purposes. Wagner is a Royalton town justice and past president of the Bar Association of Niagara County.

• F. Gerard Hogan, receiving the Integrity Award sponsored by the Niagara Frontier Alumni Chapter of the Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity. This is given to an attorney, not necessarily a fraternity member, who practices before the courts and demonstrates the fraternity’s principal attributes of candor, loyalty and honorable service to clients and the profession.

• 62nd District state Sen. George D. Maziarz, R-Newfane, receiving the Liberty Bell Award. This is given to a non-lawyer who has contributed significantly to improving the administration of justice.

Maziarz will give the keynote speech at the luncheon.
