NT: Mother's Day Shop Hop planned

Tonawanda News — The Downtown Merchants Association of North Tonawanda will be holding their third annual Mother’s Day Shop Hop today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The free event allows anyone who would like to come the ability to put together a pot of silk flowers to give to mom for Mother’s Day by walking Webster Street and picking up a different flower at each of the street’s merchants.

“It’s just a silly, fun, cute thing to do,” said Suzanna Todaro, owner of Gleam and Glimmer and secretary for the Merchants Association. “We get a fairly good mix of seniors, children and teens who come down to shop.”

The morning begins at the Partners in Art Studio, where nearly 100 pots are waiting to be painted and filled with flowers. The pots are available on a first come first served basis. From there, the participants will take their pots and go to the different shops and pick up a flower while getting to know some of the unique shops that have come to help revive the Webster Street shopping district over the past few years.

“My favorite part is when you look out the window and see everyone walking around with their flowers,” said Holly Rankie, owner of Hip Gypsy, one of the shops that will be participating in the Mother’s Day event. “You see everyone from little children with their parents to teenagers out with their friends to little old ladies. It’s just adorable.”

The motivation behind the event has been to draw attention to the Webster Community. Many shops and updates have been added to the neighborhood and many feel that the once busy shopping center is returning to its former glory.

Rankie described the event as an effort to get people to come into the area and check out the shops, but also as a way for the shops to say thank you to their patrons.
