Tonawanda News — North Tonawanda was ranked as the eighth-highest school district for teacher experience, Business First ratings released Thursday state.
Business First rated teacher experience in all 98 districts in Western New York, an area that includes Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming counties.
Ken-Ton was ranked 18th and the Tonawanda City School District came in at 27th.
The ratings were created using using data from the New York State Education Department. Districts with high percentages of teachers with experience in the 11-to-20 year range and 21-or-more year range earned positive scores. Districts with high percentages in the one-to-10 year range received negative scores.
In NT, 44.8 percent of teachers had 21 or more years of experience, 37.9 percent of teachers had 11 to 20 years of experience and 17.2 percent had one to 10 years of experience. In Ken-Ton, 28.8 percent of teachers had 21 or more years of experience, 55.3 percent of teachers had 11 to 20 years of experience and 15.8 percent had one to 10 years of experience.
In Tonawanda, 20.9 percent of teachers had 21 or more years of experience, 63.9 percent had 11 to 20 years of experience and 15.2 percent had one to 10 years of experience.
The Ellicottville district, where 94 percent of the teachers have more than 10 years of experience, was ranked first.
Business First also released its 25 Teacher of Merit Awards on Thursday, and two local teachers were honored. Students who are nominated for Business First's All-Western New York Academic Team are asked to nominate the most dedicated teachers they have had during their academic career.
This year, the students submitted 677 names. Any teacher who is nominated by at least three students over a three-year period is added to the pool of candidates. Business First selects the award winners based on student endorsements, national and state teaching awards, national board certification, standardized test scores, subject rankings and success in sports and other extracurricular activities.
