• The City of Tonawanda school district presented Distinguished Alumni Awards to Joseph Cassata, Nancy Townsend, Donald Newman and Peter Demmin.

• The North Tonawanda Council approved a measure to offer once-a-month bulk trash pick-ups.

1989 — 25 years ago

• Students from the Glendale School in the Town of Tonawanda presented a $400 check to the Buffalo Zoo to adopt a tiger.

• The North Tonawanda School District held its annual Elementary Track Meet at Vetter Stadium. Students in the fourth and fifth grades at Gilmore, Grant, Spruce, Drake, Ohio, and Meadow schools participated.

• NEWS headlines: “Nazis rush armies toward beachhead.” Dwight Eisenhower announced that heavy fighting was raging inshore to expand the beachhead operations.

• News dispatches authored by John Jarell stated that German panzer tanks and troops commanded by Field Marshall Rommel were speeding to Normandy and that American soldiers were facing tough opposition on their beachheads.
