Tonawanda News — Alderwoman-At-Large Na-ncy Donovan announced Friday that she will step down from her post on Aug. 5, six months before her term is set to expire.
The three-term council member who was not seeking re-election in November said the she choose to leave her post early to spend more time with her grandchildren, who live in Maryland.
“As I prepare for my retirement from Independent Health my life priorities have begun to change,” she said, in a statement. “I have found that I have less and less time to devote to my role as a member of the city council and here in North Tonawanda.”
She added: “Throughout my career in public office I have always taken great pride in putting considerable time and energy in conducting people’s business. It is my belief that when people put their confidence in you to serve in government you need to always be willing to go the extra mile to get the job done. Thus I have decided to step down from my post on the North Tonawanda Common Council. I have a level of expectation for myself that I simply cannot meet anymore.”
Donovan’s announcement comes less than a week after Alderman-At-Large Mal Needler suffered a serious heart attack. Her decision to leave the council will lead to a temporary replacement until elections are held in November, according to Council President Rich Andres.
Newcomer Bob Clark, a Republican who is running for Donovan’s seat, remains an option, Andres said, though the three remaining council members will advertise the open seat and conduct interviews in August before making a final determination. Clark is slated to run against Beverly Loxterman.
“We’ll have a process and call for interviews,” Andres said. “With Mal being out we’re going to need to make an appointment. God forbid one of us can’t make a meeting and we need to have a quorum. We don’t know when Mal will be back.”
Andres added that Donovan has been discussing leaving her post early “for a while.”Contact reporter Michael Regan at 693-1000, ext. 4115.
