• North Tonawanda filmmaker William Cowell was planning his second big local production “The Magic Shoe” starring James Garner.

• Airmen Jim DiFrancesco, Joe Janik, Bill Peters, Aaron Kawado, Don Miller and Ted Balbierz from the 914th Airlift Wing traded moving troops for celebrities when they took Wayne Newton and the USO Operation Salute 2003 from Kuwait into Iraq.

1988 — 25 years ago

• Hundreds of area residents stood at rail crossings in the Twin Cities to watch railroad history chug through the Tonawandas when the coal-fired, steam engine locomotive “Bershire 756” came through town as part of the weekend’s Friendship Festival.

• A new strip plaza at the corner of Sheridan Drive and Belmont Avenue was under construction with plans to open for business in the fall.
