Kenmore teen ran away, still missing

Tonawanda News — KENMORE — Nina Christofaro, a 15-year-old student at Kenmore West High School, has been missing from her village home for more than a month, police said.

“She snuck of out her bedroom window and was seen getting into a truck,” Detective Joe Vacanti said.

Rebecca Christofaro, Nina’s mother, said her daughter had been talking to an older boy on Facebook for about two weeks before she disappeared. She left her Elmwood Avenue home in her pajamas, without shoes or her purse, her mother said.

“He convinced her to go outside that night, and we never heard from her again,” she said. “It’s horrifying ... I’m terrified.”

Vacanti said he is confident that Nina was not kidnapped.

“At this point, we are becoming concerned about her safety, being just 15,” he said.

Nina has run away before, but she’s never been gone this long— 33 days, per her mother’s count.

“This just isn’t like her,” Rebecca Christofaro said. “She hasn’t even been on Facebook ... and you know teenagers, they don’t give up their Facebooks easily.”

Police haven’t been able to track Nina’s cell phone, but have been chasing down leads from calls to the station and Facebook. Callers have seen her in the Riverside area of Buffalo, near the intersection of Tonawanda Street and Esser Avenue, and near Military Road and Hinman Avenue.

“We have been in the Riverside area checking around,” Vacanti said. “She was also seen two weeks ago at a South Buffalo bar, and the Buffalo police were called ... but she must have slipped out.”

Police have also been checking in Niagara Falls, where Nina’s friends live.

Rebecca Christofaro said she was encouraged by the recent sightings of her daughter.

“We have a little bit of hope,” she said. “For the first time last night, I was able to sleep for six straight hours ... it gave me hope, it gave me something.”
