Tonawanda News — Democrat Joshua E. Dubs will seek to unseat North Tonawanda City Attorney Shawn Nickerson in November.
The Fairmont Avenue resident’s candidacy, announced this week, comes before the North Tonawanda Democratic Committee lays out its slate of endorsed candidates for the common council and mayor’s office and follows years of Republican dominance in city government.
Dubs, 31, who runs his own legal practice in Buffalo and lost in a Third Ward bid in 2011 against Alderman Eric Zadzilka, said it was the concept of public service that drew him to the race.
“I started when I was 16 volunteering and continued in law school doing pro bono work,” he said. “I see the city attorney position as an opportunity to do a tremendous amount of good for my neighbors and for the city.”
The Rhode Island native, who moved to North Tonawanda in 2009, will have his work cut out for him as he runs for a four-year term against Nickerson, who has held the post since 2005 but whose presence in city goverment dates back to 2001, when he served as assistant city attorney.
Yet Dubs said in his five years practicing law he has worked on a gamut of legal areas including civil litigation, criminal defense, real estate and probate, and believes his out-of-the-box thinking would be a benefit to the city.
“It’s very much a problem-solving position,” he said. “I have so much experience with different kinds of law and varying prospectives.”
Dubs said he is an active member of the Bar Association in Erie and Niagara counties, the Tonawandas and New York state. He also is involved with fundraising efforts for the Ride for Roswell and received a “VIP Award” from the Volunteer Lawyer’s Project last year.
He is married to his wife, Lauren, who is a pharmacist.
“The City of North Tonawanda has become home to me,” he said.Contact reporter Michael Regan at 693-1000, ext. 4115.
