Surplus sale planned at Gilmore

Tonawanda News — The North Tonawanda School District is turning lukewarm attendance during last week’s silent auction into another opportunity for those who want a link to Gilmore Elementary School’s past.

While 54 business, educational institutes and individuals swept up many of the thousands of items displayed there, early tabulations indicate there’s still a long way to go for the district to rid itself of decades of items.

Officials contend they anticipated a low turnout, and will now move to create a “surplus sale” on Thursday and Friday of this week to sell off as many of the remaining items as they can, said Assistant Superintendent Allan Getter.

“It’s a garage sale of sorts,” he said.

Several thousand dollars have been brought in to the district’s general fund as a result of the initial sale, though final tabulations will not be complete until Wednesday. Nonetheless, in anticipation of the Christian Academy of Western New York’s plan to lease part of the elementary school and move its student populace in next week, everything must go.

“Some individuals bid on multiple items and some bid on less,” said Laurie Burger, director of curriculum and instruction in the district. “We’re just now starting to record.”

Contrary to last week’s bidding process, which took place over two days, the district will label available items like desks, chairs and television, many of which date back to the early days of Gilmore Elementary School, which opened in 1925.

Christian Academy plans to lease only a portion of the school, Burger said, which would leave storage space for unsold items, though officials are hoping to move enough of its wares to make it unnecessary.

“It depends on how much is left over,” Getter added. “We’d still have room in the building if it’s stuff we want to keep.”

The sale will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday and noon to 6 p.m. Friday at the school, 789 Gilmore Ave., North Tonawanda.
