Tonawanda News — 2003 — 10 years ago

• Over 200 rounds of golf were played on opening day at the Deerwood Golf Course in North Tonawanda.

• To celebrate the season, Complete Home Care on Broad Street had a window display of Easter chicks.

1988 — 25 years ago

• No paper published.

1963 — 50 years ago

• Residents attending the Tonawanda Council meeting complained about dogs “congregating” on the street and papers flying near a food mart that created an eyesore.

• Work was begun on the second section of the Elmer G. H. Youngmann Expressway between Millersport Highway and Niagara Falls Boulevard. 

1943 — 70 years ago

Rob Roy MacLeod, executive vice president of Niagara Hudson, explained new hiring rules to 36 officials of 24 industries in the Tonawandas. All male workers had to visit the U.S. Employment Service first to get “persuasive advice” as to where the government wanted them to work. No such restraints applied to women who were strongly encouraged to take war-related jobs.

• Volume I of the Strippit Corp. “News of the Wales Line” was issued under the editorship of Clark Ralph and Miss Stella Massey of the personnel department. Wales-Strippit Corp. moved from Buffalo to more modern quarters at 345 Payne Ave. where it engaged in the war-vital production of perforating and notching dies used in punching rivet holes in airplane frames.
