Solar business park expanding

Tonawanda News — A project already underway in a growing solar business park on River Road will be bolstered by a grant from National Grid, company officials said.

The Riverview Solar Technology Park in the Town of Tonawanda is currently constructing a third building on its sweeping 180-acre campus, serving as a commercial development site. The newest structure, when complete, will entail a 33,000 square feet of space as well as another 65,000-square-foot warehouse.

TM Montante Development, located on Kenmore Avenue, will market the edifice to companies interested in alternative and green energy use, while a $30,000 “grant” from National Grid announced on Thursday will be applied to the project as part of a economic development program held by the utility provider, according to Dennis Elsenbeck, an executive with the company.

“Riverview Solar Park is a model for new development and investment and is a unique asset in our region,” Elsenbeck said in a statement, while adding that the grant has been customized to aid upstate companies in creating jobs and investment.

Matt Montante, chief operating officer with the development company, called National Grid “a responsive, strategic partner for these important and distinct projects.”

“The $30,000 grant provided by National Grid is helping us in marketing this unique business park and demonstrates its unparalleled potential,” Montante said.

In 2010, TM Montante Development launched its master plan to develop one million square feet of mixed use space, which would included solar power for prospective companies. Thus far, seven companies occupy 125,000 square feet of space.

Unifrax, located in Niagara Falls for years, moved its operations to the Riverview facility in December. The company has nearly 100 employees and now occupies 44,000 square feet of a campus building.
