Bisons win again, wild card hopes still alive

Tonawanda News — Staff Reports

The Buffalo Bisons’ International League postseason chances still have a faint pulse.

Buffalo rallied with five runs in the seventh inning to erase a Rochester lead and defeat the Red Wings for the second straight night, 6-3, this time at Frontier Field in Rochester.

After falling 3-0 to the hosts, Buffalo’s comeback began when Mike Nickeas walked, followed by Mike McCoy bunting to reach first safely while advancing Nickeas. Blake Gailen advanced both runners with his own bunt, reaching first safely on a throwing error.

Luis Jimenez, who was a hero in Thursday night’s come-from-behind win with his two-run homer, singled to score Nickeas and McCoy. This time it was Andy LaRoche who was the home run hero, scoring Jimenez, Gailen and himself with his three-run shot over the left field wall.

Buffalo added another run in the top of the eighth inning, when Nickeas scored on Clint Robinson’s sacrifice bunt.

Jeremy Jeffress came into the game in the ninth inning looking for his second straight save in as many nights. After getting Jermaine Mitchell to ground out, Jeffress gave up a double to Deibinson Romero. He quickly snuffed out any hopes for a Rochester comeback, striking out Josmil Pinto and Aaron Hicks to end the game.

Scott Gracey (1-0) got the win for Buffalo (72-69), who is now tied with Lehigh Valley at 2.5 games behind IL wild card holder Norfolk with three games remaining. The Tides lost Friday.

The Bisons and Red Wings face each other again tonight at Frontier Field. The opening pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Drew Hutchison (0-3) is scheduled to start for Buffalo.
