Tonawanda News — The man accused of staging a robbery with his girlfriend at a CVS store on Payne Avenue last week was transported to North Tonawanda City Court and charged Monday.

Kevin M. Spellane-Newman, 25, 130 62nd Ave., Niagara Falls, was arrested Thursday by Niagara Falls police and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance a short while after he and his girlfriend, Kayla Hotaling, allegedly coordinated an armed robbery at the store inside the Mid-City Plaza.

Police said Hotaling, a CVS employee, was in the store alone Thursday morning, and reported that she was robbed at gunpoint, forced to open a safe then assaulted before a suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

North Tonawanda police said Hotaling later confessed that the robbery was a hoax, then issued a warrant Friday for Spellane-Newman, who was charged at  2:14 p.m. Monday in city court with third-degree grand larceny and conspiracy. He’s being held in lieu of $5,000 bail.

Hotaling, 23, of Doebler Drive, was arraigned Friday in city court on third-degree grand larceny, fifth-degree conspiracy and third-degree falsely reporting an incident.
